The Dewsbury Blueprint, which was unveiled in February 2020, will see significant regeneration across the town centre including The Arcade, Market, shopfront improvements, and more.

The Arcade was purchased by the council in May 2020 and, together with the market, forms a key part of the council’s vision for a flexible retail and leisure space in the town centre.

Councillor Peter McBride, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “Recruiting the architects to come up with a design for these projects is an important step towards achieving our blueprint vision for Dewsbury.

"Regeneration projects of this scale take time to get off the ground, but that doesn’t mean the legal and technical work isn’t happening in the background. A great example of this is Pioneer House, now the Pioneer Higher Skills Academy, which opened its doors to students for the first time at the end of November.

"Hundreds of people have worked in the background to make that vision a reality and now it will benefit young people for years to come.

“The renovation of The Arcade and Dewsbury Market will help to bring more independent and local businesses to the town, increasing the town’s cultural offerings. Once completed, I’m sure that they will attract shoppers from across the region to the town centre.”

Over the next 12 to15 months, BPD will carry out all aspects of design work required to deliver these blueprint projects in Dewsbury.

Between December 2020 and March 2021, the council will carry out some initial works on the Arcade to stabilise its condition.

The main project is expected to commence in early 2022. The major refurbishment works to the market will also commence early 2022 following the Christmas period.

Local residents will have the opportunity to comment on the designs for the market once they are completed.
