How crazy rainbow hair is putting Heckmondwike hairstylist in the spotlight

Mum-of-two Katrina Goodwin, 34, built up a large customer base over a 15-year career.

But it was the Covid-19 pandemic which gave her time to think and proved the catalyst for her to launch her own business.

Katrina opened The Pin Up Hair Co in High Street, Heckmondwike, on August 13 – and hasn’t looked back.

The salon has had to shut during the third national lockdown, of course, but Katrina isn’t fazed and said: “It’s a case of so far, so good.

“I’ve always wanted my own business and when the salon I was working for in Cleckheaton closed in the first lockdown it got me thinking about what I wanted to do.

“It sounds crazy to launch a business in the middle of a global pandemic but I decided to go for it, and it’s been brilliant.”

Katrina, who lives with husband Robert and children Florence, five, and Reginald, two, in Birkenshaw, specialises in what she calls “crazy hair” and many of her clients come from Instagram.

“At my previous salon I did most of the colour work and I specialise in vibrant rainbow colours. I’ve done it for years and got myself a bit of a reputation.”

Katrina loves entering awards and has tasted plenty of success already. The salon won Treatwells Top Rated Salon 2020 and Katrina was shortlisted for Salon Award’s Stylist of the Year 2020 and nominated for Hair Colourist of the Year 2021.

She’s just received news that she’s a finalist in three categories at the prestigious Hair and Beauty Awards UK for Hairstylist of the Year, Best Salon and Best Colour Salon.

Katrina, who has two trainees Jade Warrillow and Alfie Owens and self-employed brows and lashes expert Faye Lee working at the salon, added: “There’s been a lot of hard work and tears – all in just four-and-a-half months of business, and for one of those months I was locked down!

“There’s nothing we can do about lockdown so we just have to be patient. For the time being I’ve got my hands full with home-schooling Florence and keeping Reg out of mischief.”
