Business: Extension bid at Birstall furniture store gets go-ahead
An application to extend a Birstall furniture store has been approved.
The application sought permission to create a mezzanine floor within the DFS store at Birstall Shopping Park, as well as ‘modernise’ the front of the building.
A small mezzanine level currently exists within the unit, providing additional back-of-house storage space above part of the ground floor accommodation.
The planning permission will allow the store to extend this floor to ‘maximise its floorspace capacity’, providing extra sales space and back-of-house facilities.

A document submitted alongside the application said the floor will be supported by “the introduction of two staircases and a lift: one staircase to the front of the unit for customer access, and a secondary staircase and lift at the rear for staff use.”
It added that the existing sales area on the ground floor will “continue to occupy the majority of the unit.”
Plans for the shop front include a reconfigured entrance and glazing arrangement.
Plans said the entrance feature will be modernised with a larger glazed section and clearer framing, providing “an improved sense of transparency and visual interest, aligning with the retailer’s operational requirements and brand identity.”
DFS Birstall is located within units 9 and 10 at the shopping park.
Other bulky goods retailers located within the shopping park include Bensons for Beds, Argos, and The Range.
The application was received by Kirklees Council in October 2025, and a decision was made in January.
