They topped the charts during the 1970s and 80s

They say the old ones are the best and Friday evening at one of our area’s favourite theatres proved that saying to be so true, with the return of Smokie to their home territory.

Very obviously pleased to be back playing to their home crowd (they are originally from Bradford) they have just returned from a long European tour.

They regaled us with a fantastic back catalogue of songs while telling us of their rise to fame. We heard songs from their very early albums, songs from their latest album and a super selection of hits from bands including Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Searchers and more, ending with – need I say – the song about the very lovely Alice – proving the boys’ great vocal harmonies and musical talent.

Their warm affection for their audience was evident and their large and obvious following of fans made the whole evening an affectionate and very enjoyable piece of nostalgia and a tribute to one of music’s most enduring and likeable bands.
