The beauty of the perfect family pantomime from Showstoppers

So what is the recipe for the perfect family pantomime? Take one classic fairy story, add a hearty measure of slapstick, pour in a talented cast and a soupcon of innuendo then get Cleckheaton’s trumping answer to Johnny Vegas to stir it all up and voila!

Showstoppers’ take on Sleeping Beauty had all that and then some, to the delight of the packed audience at Cleckheaton town hall.

Josh Brown as Tommy Trumper had the kids rolling in the aisles (you can guess what the sound effects were).

Debra Haigh’s evil fairy Carabosse drew some extremely hearty boos from young and old alike; she was positively revelling in her role.

Nick Teed was superb as the henpecked King Satupon while his Queen Snotious (Fiona Lindsay) had almost as many fabulous gowns as she had witty one-liners.

The addition of some modern material really gave Becky Lenk (Princess Aurora) and Nathan Graham (Prince Michael) chance to showcase their considerable vocal talents, with the prince even trying his hand at some break-dancing before belting out One-D’s You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful.

The highlight for me was the rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas – with of course a bra that can only hold three!

Special mention must go to the Young Showstoppers team whose slick routines and swift costume changes showed that the future of the group is in good hands.

Sleeping Beauty is on until Monday December 23.
