Mirfield to host Queen’s Diamond Jubilee festival

PLANS are taking shape for a right royal knees up in Mirfield to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June.

The aim is to hold the Jubilee Festival at Mirfield Showground on Sunday June 3.

One of the organisers, Richard Hartley, said: “We’re still in the planning stages at the moment so we can’t be too specific at this stage.

“Things will be up in the air for the next 10 days or so, but after that we will know where we are going with it.”

Mr Hartley, who is also a town councillor and member of the Mirfield Show committee, said the intention was to have, ‘a fun day, but not as grand as Mirfield Show. We’re really looking at holding a street party in a park.’

The idea for the festival came after little happened in Mirfield to mark last year’s Royal wedding.

“Then people kept asking what we were going to be doing to celebrate the diamond jubilee, so we decided to go ahead and try to organise the festival,” said Mr Hartley.

So he and co-organiser Martin Ibberson decided to have a go.

“We thought let’s pull our fingers out and do something ourselves. We’ll be inviting local organisations to get involved,” added Mr Hartley.

It is hoped to have music, dancers, attractions, rides, stalls, a food court, fancy dress and a singalong.

A festival website has been created – www.mirfieldfestival.co.uk

“It’s a bit sparse at the moment,” said Mr Hartley, “but give us a few more days and then watch this space.”
