Cities taking part include Madrid, Mumbai, Singapore, Brisbane, Vancouver, Mexico City and New York – and Huddersfield.

The main attraction will be Malkit Singh MBE, who is billed as the world’s most successful Bhangra performer and singer. Singh is the biggest selling artist in genre’s history, with 21 albums and tours in 36 countries under his belt.

Bhangra Band DCS singer and Britain’s Got Bhangra star Shin will also be appearing.

The celebration kicks off with a performance showing the evolution of Bhangra from its rural roots in Panjab to its current form.

There will also be a live dance performance involving young people from schools and colleges across the region, including Kirklees College and University of Huddersfield. It is the brainchild of VIRSA, a community project which won £30,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for its Bhangra Renaissance project.

Tickets priced £5-£15 are available at www.kirklees.gov.uk/townhalls or from Kirklees booking offices on 01484 223200, 01924 324501 or 01484 222444.
