Kafka comedy comes with kiss

A HILARIOUS take on fame and cult of celebrity will wow audiences at Theatre Royal Wakefield next month.

The award-winning Wakefield Little Theatre company will bring Alan Bennett’s Kafka’s Dick to life on stage on Wednesday April 4 and Thursday April 5.

In a middle class suburban sitting room in 1980 sits Sidney, an insurance agent who is besotted with the writer Franz Kafka.

He is working on his Kafka artticle for the Small Print, the Journal of Insurance Studies, while his frustrated wife Linda stares morosely out of the French windows and his elderly father scans the bookshelves in an efford to convince family and social workers that he isn’t gaga.

Suddently into their midst descends Kafka’s best friend, Max Brod, dead since 1968, carrying a tortoise, which on being kissed by Linda, turns into Kafka himself, who has been dead since 1924.

When Kafka’s mother and father arrive, both deceased, an encounter of pythonesque proportions ensures.

The show, directed by Ian Hey, stars group members Nick Gillott as Kafka, Steve Fox as Max Brod, Paul Haley as Sidney and Roz Afferson as Linda.
