It’s only rock and roll but I like it!

There are a few excellent 1970s cover band specialists out there at the moment, but Norry Church’s outfit Jeepster are among the best for sheer entertainment value, an absolutely belting live act.

Dressed in suitable 1970s rock star regalia – a military bandsman’s tunic and later a Union Jack frock coat – front man Norry is a consummate performer and his excellent band stormed through a set of top tunes, kicking off with Queen’s We Will Rock You, morphing into a series of hits and medleys from my personal-favourite musical decade.

We heard stomping numbers by Slade, the Beatles and T Rex – naturally including Jeepster – and cracking chart-toppers from Rod Stewart, for whom Mr Church is a dead-ringer!

There were great versions of The First Cut is the Deepest, Maggie May and Handbags and the Gladrags, as well as lesser-known but truly excellent tunes such as Badfinger’s No Matter What.

I’d happily admit to liking – or even owning – copies of these little gems because they have enormous street cred.

But on Saturday night, I have to confess to singing along to the Bay City Rollers’ Shang-A-Lang, a tune I absolutely hated when it first came out – so I guess we all mellow with age!
