Festival has pulling power

A sports presenter who led his rugby league team to a championship victory will officially open a beer festival commemorating his side’s success.

Former Dewsbury Rugby League Club captain Mike ‘Stevo’ Stephenson will celebrate the 40th anniverary of the team’s championship win when he join crowds at this year’s Heavy Woollen Beer and Cider Festival.

The three-day event at Dewsbury Town Hall will feature a 1973 Champions bar in honour of the legendary team.

Visitors can look forward to dozens of real ales across four bars, and live music from Blackstone Edge, Dewsbury Music Centre Swing Band and Fat Stanley in the evenings.

The festival, organised by the Heavy Woollen branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, begins on Thursday May 16.
