Fabulous frolics as
Priscillia hits the road

It’s rare to see a big touring musical and not already know the story, the songs and most of the script.

Which is why I decided to avoid all internet talk, previews and reviews before going to see Priscilla Queen of the Desert, at Bradford Alhambra this week.

Having never seen the film, despite being an Australiaphile, it was great to watch something not knowing how it would end.

The story follows drag queen Tick (Jason Donovan), transvestite Bernadette (Richard Grieve) and young queen Adam/Felicia (Graham Weaver) as they leave the safety of Sydney behind as they take a road trip to Alice Springs.

The performances were as fabulous as the costumes but it was Richard Grieve, unrecognisable as the classy one of the gang, who stole the show, with a sensitive and regal performance.

Grieve, who has appeared in Neighbours, Home and Awayand Emmerdale, also undoubtedly had the best legs in the show (female performers included).

Donovan’s performance seemed a little more subdued than perhaps it should have been but his portrayal of Tick was less camp and more thoughtful, especially the scenes with his new-found son. A standing – or should I say dancing – ovation was well deserved, especially for the three divas, Emma Kingston, Ellie Leah and Laura Mansell, who brought the whole show together.
