Dewsbury Minster hosts festival as part of Tour de France countdown

There will be more than 25 activities taking place including ukulele playing, samba drumming and handbell ringing as well as art displays, creative writing presentations, drama workshops and stories in Yorkshire dialect.

Many local arts groups will be running interactive demonstrations with opportunities for visitors to try painting, weaving, flower arranging, knitting or crochet – and take away what they make.

Event co-ordinator Ronalda Johnstone says that the long term objective is to bring more arts and culture to Dewsbury by reviving the town’s handbell team.

“Any money made from the stalls will go towards restoring some of our handbells so that the Dewsbury handbell group can be reformed to provide another enjoyable activity for people in the area,” she said.

“We need to raise around £3,000. There will be a cake stall, raffle and tombola.

“Raffle or tombola prizes can be taken to the Minster by Friday June 13 and cakes on the day would be welcome.

“We hope people may discover a new interest or hobby they would like to pursue.”

The festival takes places at the minster, in Rishworth Road, 9.30am–5pm.
