Trojans move into top spot as Woodcock scores four

Thornhill Trojans 54

West Craven Warriors 16

Loose forward Scott Woodcock produced a superb four-try display in a demolition of West Craven, which saw Trojans move top of Pennine Division Three.

Woodcock has been an instant hit since joining from Hunslet Hawks. Captain, Anthony Harris opened Thornhill’s scoring following Woodcock’s break, Mark Hodgson converted.

Penalties took Thornhill close and Harris threatened but from play-the-ball Jake Ratcliffe nipped over and Hodgson goaled.

Woodcock then ran onto a well-timed short pass to score, again Hodgson converted.

From the restart, Ratcliffe scored a converted try between the posts.

Thornhill lost focus either side of half-time as shown when Danny Fisher’s pass to Liam Morley was ruled forward.

West Craven took advantage of a missed tackle and hooker Chris Thomas went between the posts, Dean Barrett converted.

On the stroke of half-time this was cancelled out when Woodcock used his strength to stand up in a tackle and offload to Morley, who stepped between the posts, Hodgson converted.

As the second half got underway Thornhill appeared to lose their way. First visiting centre Stephen Ansell stepped away to score for Barrett to add the goal.

On the restart Thornhill were again caught and Tom Finlay dived over for an uncovered try.

Harsh words were exchanged between the Thornhill players but as the half wore on they regained control and at times showed good, open rugby.

Woodcock scored his second try when he ran onto a pass and several tacklers couldn’t turn him on his back as he plunged over.

Quick hands saw Woodcock go on another powerful run and charge over for his hat-trick. Hodgson added both goals.

Rob Long set up the next try, making good yards down the wing before slick passing saw Morley put Tom Holdsworth over. Hodgson goaled.

Thornhill began to experiment and at least three tries were disallowed as passes were ruled forward.

A slight skirmish broke out but once order was restored Woodcock again proved unstoppable and went over for his fourth try.

Hodgson kicked his ninth goal from nine attempts and Thornhill moved into pole position.
