Thornhill Trojans pulled off a remarkable 36-4 victory over Leigh East in National Conference Division Two last Saturday.

Leigh East arrived at Overthorpe Park as the unbeaten league leaders, while the Trojans had produced below par performances in their previous two outings

The margin of victory and the manner in which the Trojans executed this performance was one to savour.

Leigh never really looked to be a threat as the Trojans outplayed them.

The foundation for the victory was a solid first half showing. Man of the match Ben Kendall stood firm against a large Leigh East pack, while two try Danny Ratcliffe also had a terrific game.

The way he worked with his half back partner Liam Morley was like a well oiled machine.

The Trojans rattled up a 24-0 inside the first 30 minutes.

Jake Wilson finished a strong attack, using his strength to twist over and plant the ball down for a try. Andrew Bates converted.

Danny Ratcliffe broke clear to race around the outside of the Leigh defence. The scrum half took play back in field to touch down between the posts. Bates converted.

Winger Mindaugas Bendikas made a surge for the try line but was held up on his back. The referee took play back and Anthony Harris plunged over for a try.

With Bates off the field nursing a shoulder injury, Sam Ratcliffe took over the kicking duties to convert.

On the half hour mark Thornhill were awarded a penalty and completed the whirlwind start when Danny Ratcliffe spotted a gap and dived over for a try. Sam Ratcliffe converted.

At 24-0 Thornhill were buzzing and heading for an unexpected runaway victory.

In the run up to half time the visiting supporters finally had something to cheer when centre Sam Grainy grabbed an unconverted try.

A penalty goal early in the second half from Sam Ratcliffe kept the scoreboard ticking over before a wonderful piece of opportunism from Liam Morley sealed the game.

Morley picked up the ball from acting half back and went on a solo run before planting the ball down for an unconverted try.

With Thornhill now firmly in control and heading for victory the game’s final score came from flying winger Bendikas.

Jake Wilson sent out a super pass out to the wing and Bendikas stormed 40 metres to score his 11th try of the season. Sam Ratcliffe converted.

In the closing minute of the game Leigh East’s Lee Rowley let his frustrations spill over and was sent to the sin bin for questioning the referee’s decisions.

It was a perfect performance from the Trojans who remain unbeaten in the league.

Thornhill face another unbeaten side on Saturday when they travel to Hunslet Club Parkside knowing victory will see them move top.
