WAKEFIELD Harriers middle-distance runner Charlene Thomas and Cleckheaton hammer thrower Sarah Holt have been named in the final Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team that will compete in the forthcoming European Championships.
The original squad of 109 athletes has been reduced to 82 following last weekend’s Aviva 2012 Trials, in Birmingham, in which Thomas clocked 4:23.13 to finish fourth in the women’s 1,500m while Holt was disappointed with her fourth place throw of 63.94m in the hammer.
The performances fell short of the Olympic A standards and both athletes will now travel to Helsinki for the European Championships, which get under way on Wednesday and run until Sunday.
Holt, 25, will now endeavour to put the disappointment of Birmingham behind her and focus on her senior British debut in Finland.
Also in action in Birmingham was Wakefield Harrier Martyn Bernard who placed fourth in the men’s high jump final with a below-par leap of 2.16m.
Former Wakefield Girls High School student Hannah Evenden, now competing for Edinburgh, was seventh in the shot put final with 12.70m before finishing 12th in the hammer final with 53.48m.
