O'Regan and Khan eye Elite boxing glory

Heckmondwike boxer Cory O'Regan is setting his sights on more national glory when he competes at the England Boxing Elite Championships.

O’Regan will travel to the Echo Arena in Liverpool with high hopes having already earned success on the national stage.

O’Regan became the first Yorkshire boxer to pick up a new English Senior Elite title belt in December, when he travelled to the iconic York Hall, Bethnal Green and defeated Finchley and District ABC boxer Mason Smith on points.

O’Regan retained his 60KG English Elite lightweight title with a hard-fought victory in Birmingham in February.

The 20-year-old, boxing out of the Bradford Police and Community College, came up against Cleary’s BC man Danny Quartermaine, and successfully defended the crown in front of a vociferous crowd.

O’Regan is coached by former Dewsbury professional Mally McIver and now switches his attentions to more glory having been installed as third seed in his category.

Another of McIver’s protégé’s from Bradford College’s boxing programme, Ismail Khan, will also compete in Liverpool this weekend.

Khan, who is from the KBW Club in Dewsbury, will be looking to add to the England Youth Championship title he claimed earlier this year in Rotherham.

The championships are the culmination of the domestic calendar for amateur boxing clubs in England.

Ten male and female champions will be crowned after three days of boxing which begins with the quarter-finals tomorrow (Friday), semi-finals on Saturday and finals on Sunday May 1.

England Boxing chief executive, Paul Porter, said: “The Elite National Championships is the big event in the boxing calendar for grassroots boxing clubs in England.

“The finals weekend is always a great showcase of the fantastic talent we have in this country and provides an opportunity for up-and-coming boxers to showcase their skills and progress their careers in a way that may one day see them go on to compete at major International championships and the Olympic Games.”

Khan and O’Regan will travel to Liverpool tomorrow, with the weigh-in taking place at 9.30am, followed by the quarter-final draw.

They are both expected to be in the ring around lunchtime looking to advance to Saturday’s semi-finals.
