Fisher exit FA Sunday Cup

ST JOHN Fisher Old Boys bowed out of the FA Sunday Cup, losing 5-0 to highly-rated Merseyside outfit Oyster Martyrs.

Fisher found the going tough as ex-professional Leighton McGivern scored four times, while Thomas Rooney, cousin of England star Wayne, also struck.

McGivern bagged the winning goal when Oysters defeated fellow Liverpool side Paddock in the 2011 FA Sunday Cup final, while he has also played pro for Rochdale and Accrington Stanley, and he proved too good for Fisher.

Fisher were not at their best and were unable to produce the same level of performance that saw them defeat Huyton-based Oak Tree Pub 3-0 in the first round when Rob Bordman bagged a hat-trick.

Martyrs had done their homework on Bordman, who was well-marked throughout.

Fisher are due to entertain holders Halton Moor in the West Riding County Sunday Cup third round this Sunday (kick-off 11am).

If weather intervenes there is a chance that the tie could be played on the 3G pitch at St John Fisher High School.

Due to their cup commitments, Fisher have only played two matches in the Heavy Woollen Sunday League Premier Division this time and are already four or five games behind some sides.

Thornhill Lees lead the table with five wins and a draw from their six matches so Fisher face stern competition if they are to retain the title.

They have, however, already pledged to enter the FA Sunday Cup again next season.

n Only one game beat the icy weather in the Heavy Woollen Sunday League last week.

That saw White Horse maintain their perfect start in Division Two with a 4-1 win at Mount Pleasant.

Dale Joy was the hero as he fired all four goals for White Horse who took over the top spot.

Fayyaz Bobat hit Mount’s consolation as they remain in third place.
