DEWSBURY-based boxer Qais Ashfaq won a silver medal for Great Britain in the Tammer tournament, in Finland.

The 19-year-old who trains at the town’s KBW Amateur Boxing Club was picked to represent his country at the annual competition in Tampere and Ashfaq, one of the country’s most promising fighters, returned home with a silver in the 56kg class.

The Briton defeated Poland’s Sylwester Koztowski 18-7 in the preliminary round to set up a quarter-final meeting with Hungary’s Krisztian Nagy.

Ashfaq edged the contest 16-13 to reach the showpiece but was denied a gold medal by Welsh fighter Sean McGoldrick, who won 10-6 in the final.

Gold medals were scooped by England’s Sam Maxwell and Joe Joyce, who also won the most stylish boxer trophy.
