LEEDS United dropped down to 15th place in the Npower Championship after suffering a narrow defeat at Burnley.

Charlie Austin’s 20th goal of the season eight minutes from time proved enough to give new Burnley manager Sean Dyche his second victory in two games after taking over.

An even contest between two sides that had slipped into mid-table positions following recent results saw little in the way of goalmouth action in the first half, although goalkeeper Paddy Kenny was called into action early on to deny Dean Marney with a double save.

Leeds, who made two changes to their starting line-up with top scorer Luciano Becchio back up front instead of Luke Varney and Adam Drury returning to left-back with Tom Lees out because of the eye injury suffered at Brighton, gradually eased into the contest with El-Hadji Diouf having a shot deflected wide and hitting another effort over.

Kenny ensured the half ended goalless when he tipped Keiran Trippier’s shot over.

United improved in the second half and Aidan White brought a save out of home keeper Grant. But they failed to turn their better possession into chances and it was Burnley who came close when former Leeds loanee Sam Vokes saw an effort blocked by Kenny.

With the game seemingly heading for a draw it was the hosts who won it eight minutes from time when Trippier was played in down the right and supplied a cross that caught the Whites defence out with Austin getting up to head past Kenny.

Leeds forced some late pressure as they tried to hit back, but again there was a lack of a cutting edge and they had suffered more Tuesday night woe.

They have now failed to win in five Tuesday league games this season and have picked up just three points from their five games since the last international break.
