Whitehaven win provides Rams a timely boost

The Rams ended a four-match losing run in the Kingstone Press Championship as they moved eighth in the table and closed the gap on the top six.

The Rams had players returning from injury and it paid off as they ran in six tries, all converted by Paul Sykes, who took his tally to 26 for the season.

Morrison said: “It was a much improved display from our last few games and it showed what we can do when we have front rowers back in the side.

“We still have a few players missing but we are looking to get a strong side back fit for the right time of the year, so we can give it a good push.

“The message before we went up to Cumbria was to put everything from the last few weeks behind us and to start the season again.

“We looked at it being our first game, so we are one from one and will look to build from here.

“We had a good day, travelling up and getting the win enabled us to enjoy the journey back and the family feel is back again.”

Morrison has meanwhile taken on the role of senior team manager for the Jamaican national team, based in the UK.

Jamaica will face Ireland in an international at the end of this season, while Morrison hopes to build a strong squad ahead of the next World Cup.

Morrison added: “We want to raise the profile and rankings of the national side in Jamaica as we work towards the next World Cup.

“There are some quality players and would like to be in a position where some of their players can come over here and earn professional contracts.”

Rams forward Joel Farrell played in Jamaica’s World Cup qualifying matches against Canada and USA in Florida last December and is seen as an integral part of the Reggae Warriors’ squad.

Joel’s dad, former Leeds Rhinos and England forward Anthony Farrell, also looks set to be appointed an ambassador for the Jamaican national team.
