Morrison revels in terrific team display

Victory saw Dewsbury move seventh in the Kingstone Press Championship, four points above the relegation zone and the Rams will now look to pile the pressure on the teams above them.

Speaking after the dramatic 16-14 win at Odsal, Morrison said: “At half-time of games in recent weeks we have been in similar positions but have not been smart enough to put them to bed and we have worked hard on that.

“A 94 per cent second half completion rate helped us grind out a tough win.

“Six penalties in a row meant we had to defend at the start of the second half but the boys dug deep and had each other’s backs which is what we are all about.

“We spoke about going to Bradford and getting a win to turn our season around and we will take a lot of confidence out of the game.

“At the start we were looking over our shoulder but we have now moved up to seventh.

“A few weeks ago at Sheffield we were 20 points up but didn’t put the game to bed and got beat after the hooter and then last week against Batley I thought we should have won and that would have put us on the verge of the top four.

“I thought we deserved the win right through. It looked like we may only get a draw but we got out of it and earned two points.”

Speaking on the dramatic end to the game, when Paul Sykes kicked a penalty goal after the full time hooter sounded, Morrison added: “When I saw him (Bulls player Adam Sidlow) kick the ball I was over the moon and I just wanted us to get in a position for a one pointer.

“You don’t get too many chances like that but on the flip side we have been in that position ourselves when a dumb play has cost us.

“It was a definite penalty but you don’t know if the referee will give one so close to the end when it is a match changing situation and Sykesy stood up to knock it over.”

Sykes also proved the match winner in the Challenge Cup tie when his late drop goal sealed a 31-30 victory.
