Battyeford Belles moved joint second in the West Riding Women’s League thanks to last week’s 3-1 win over Wetherby Athletic.

The Belles moved level on points with Wetherby and have a game in hand. They started well against their rivals when Rachel Lockwood opened the scoring.

The Belles continued to dominate with Louise Wardman and Becky Wiggans going close before Hester Longstaff’s shot was judged to have crossed the line to double their lead before half-time.

Ex-Wetherby players Jo Currie and Sarah Taylor, along with Alex Womersley, were added to the Belles’ attack and proved a threat .

Leanne Webster and Rachel Lockwood dictated play from midfield and the latter fed Taylor to make it 3-0.

Club captain, and the third ex-Wetherby player, Charlotte Twigger marshalled the defence, supported by goalkeeper Gemma Robshaw, Becca Banks, Olivia Harding and player-of-the-match Kirsty Pollard.

Wetherby got a late consolation goal but the Belles are confident ahead of Sunday’s trip to Ilkley Town Ladies (ko 2pm).
