Wheelchair tag rugby proves a real hit

A WHEELCHAIR tag rugby session held at Heckmondwike Grammar School last Saturday was hailed a huge success by organisers.
Helen Gardner, who works at the school and is secretary of the Rugby League Disabled Supporters' Association, is now hoping to set up a wheelchair rugby team in the Bradford area.
Players from the only two established wheelchair rugby teams in the country, Wigan and Halifax, attended to give coaching and organise mini games, while a representative from Bradford Bulls and their mascot Bullman was also present and handed out goody bags to children.
The morning session saw youngsters give wheelchair tag rugby a go and in the afternoon it was the turn of the adults. Several students from Heckmondwike's sixth form attended.
Wheelchair rugby is not just open to disabled people and many who attended were surprised to learn that abled bodied people can also play.
Helen said: "We meet so many disabled people when we attend rugby league games and we became involved in wheelchair rugby through the RL Disabled Supporters' Association.
"At the moment there are only two wheelchair rugby teams in the country but after the success of last week, we hope to have enough interested people to set up a team in Bradford.
"It was a very long day, with coaching sessions in the morning and afternoon but it was well worth it and everyone left with smiles on their faces."
