BIG-TIME boxing featuring local champions is the aim for West Yorkshire in the near future and to help fulfil their potential two local fighters have been training with Amir Khan.
Fight manger Chris Aston, promoter Steve Woods and trainer Julian McGowan hope undefeated Dewsbury super-featherweight Gary Sykes will be at the forefront of the campaign.
Gary has just signed a new two-year deal with co-managers Aston and Woods, both boxer and team having delivered over the past 12 months on their previous agreement – Sykes with five straight impressive performances, and his promotional and management team with regular fights, and equally as importantly Sky TV coverage.
Gary said: "The early part of my career was frustrating with only two fights in 18 months but Steve and Chris have done everything they promised myself and my trainer Julian they would and now all I have to do is worry about the fighting, everything else is taken care of."
Chris added: "We are building for the future, my son, 18-year-old Tyrone Nurse has just turned professional with us, Batley heavyweight Zahid Kahut is starting to attract a large local following, and Huddersfield's Tyrone McInerney is also back in the gym looking sharp, hoping to recapture his early potential."
Chris trained and managed former world champion James Hare, and also current British cruiserweight champion Mark Hobson, but with trainers McGowan, Scott Walker and Peter Cullen over in Linthwaite, is looking to the future.
"Three years from now I envisage a gym full of champions at all levels. We have a strong team now, are very focussed, and we want to bring boxing back to Dewsbury and Huddersfield."
Steve Woods and promoter Frank Maloney are planning to do just that, once these four prospects get a solid following, they will be looking at local venues and television coverage for their stars.
Trainer Julian McGowan said: "It's starting to get exciting now, Gary and Tea (as Nurse is known in the gym) have unlimited potential but we are still working hard and taking one fight at a time."
Gary and Tea have been sparring with, amongst others, Olympic silver medalist and current Commonwealth champion Amir Khan. Such was the impression both made they have been invited back.
"Both performed exceptionally well, Gary was specifically requested as he is one of the few fighters, who can match Amir for speed. Khan knew Gary from their international amateur days, so jumped at the offer of sparring," said Julian.
"Gary stayed with Khan for four tough rounds – this is the level we are aiming for."
"It was tough work but if I want to make it big, I have to compete at this level. Amir has improved since our amateur days, it goes without saying. But I have also, and Amir's trainer Oliver Harrison says we can come back anytime, we've already arranged dates so I must have made an impact," said Gary.
Sykes will be looking for win number eight on Friday March 28th at the Barnsley Metrodome, once again a Sky Sports card.
Unbeaten heavyweight prospect Zahid Kahut, a solicitor in Dewsbury, is on the same bill and is looking for his third straight win as a professional, he is aiming to call time on Londoner Big Ben Hardy, who is also unbeaten. Nurse makes his eagerly awaited debut.
As always, anyone wishing to get tickets, priced at £35 to £70 for ringside seats can contact Tony on 07877 945883, Julian on 07810 524659 and Zahid on 07838 118646. Tickets are also on sale at Mount Video Centre in Batley.
