DEWSBURY Rams have anxious eyes set on an attendance of at least 1,000 for their final National League One home game of the season, against Featherstone Rovers at Tetley's Stadium on Sunday (3pm).
A four-figure crowd would enable the club to break even on the day but less and they will again be counting the cost.
Rams' chairman Mark Sawyer revealed that the attendance of 524 against Whitehaven for the previous home game, when Dewsbury paid winning money, cost the club around £6,500.
Now Mr Sawyer has called a fans' forum for September 22 (7.30pm), when it is hoped Dewsbury's situation regarding finances and signings for next year, will be clearer. Coach Warren Jowitt will also attend.
Mr Sawyer said: "A group of supporters reported that contributions to the Squadbuilder had dropped from £12,000 to around £4,500 in 12 months.
"They attempted to bridge some of that gap and raised about £5,000 which helped us to retain Dominic Maloney and two or three other players, it was a great help.
"We will go into National League Two next season and there will be some clubs with almost 10 times as much money available for players as we have.
"Hunslet could finish bottom this time, their budget is for attendances of 500, which is what we might get next year, but they have also three times as much from a squadbuilder and a private scheme but we won't spend money we haven't got.
"Some of the players we are trying to keep have been approached by other clubs.
"We've had a shocking year, which has been propped up by the board of directors. We can't be signing players when there is no certainty of us being able to pay for them.
"In the past few years we have been able to attract sponsors but the credit crunch has made it very difficult to do the same for next year.
"This might seem all doom and gloom but we're being realistic. If everybody pulls together and supporters rally round we shall have a decent team.
"It's time for people to do some thinking. Hopefully, by September 22, we shall know exactly where we are and we can move forward on that basis. Whichever level we are at, the club will get our full commitment."
Utility back David Clayton's permanent move to York brings Dewsbury a transfer fee, while costs will have been cut with Josh Weeden joining Doncaster. He has made 39 appearances over the past two seasons.
Jowitt will have centre Andy Bostock, half-back Ryan Smith and back row man Taron Wildey available on Sunday, to give competition for places for probably the first time since he took over, although Ryan Glynn is a doubt with an ankle injury.
Jowitt was unhappy with the side's first half showing at Salford. He added: "We had three tries disallowed, which was ridiculous, but too many players were going through the motions and that's not good enough.
"If we had attacked with any sort of vigour we would have shaken them. I got a few things off my chest at half-time and the second half was much more like it. Kane Epati made lots of ground down the left.
"Our last two games are winnable but this is a cut-throat business and they have to be on top of their game. If not I shall make changes and look to bring in new players."
