CASTLE Hall religious education teacher Jagdeep Dhaliwal is undertaking a mammoth task of completing 12 marathons in 12 months.
Dhaliwal, from Ossett, is already a third of a way through his 'mission impossible' as he looks to complete a personal challenge of running a marathon a month while raising money for charity.
The 32-year-old only recently started marathon running and admits he couldn't understand why people would put themselves through the stress and strains of a long-distance run.
But the former Queen Elizabeth Grammar School pupil insists he now can't get enough of running and is travelling far and wide to complete his ultimate goal.
"I was never really a keen runner up until a few years ago," he admitted.
"I used to watch the London marathon on television every year and didn't understand why people would put themselves through so much pain.
"My friends and family just think that I'm crazy to attempt 12 marathons in 12 months but everyone has been really supportive and it's my mission to complete it."
Dhaliwal has already picked up impressive times in the Bombay, Valencia, Barcelona and London marathons this year.
He'll be going on to run in Edinburgh, Mont Blanc, the Swiss Alps, Reykjavik, Berlin, Amsterdam, New York and Lisbon before the end of the year.
Dhaliwal, who now lives in Leeds and teaches at Castle Hall School in Mirfield, has competed in the London and New York marathons before, while also having a taste of the Rome marathon and midnight marathon in Norway.
He insists that although the marathons are around three and a half hours of gruelling hard work, he still has time to enjoy the sights of the numerous places on his calendar.
He continued: "Being a teacher, it's quite difficult to get the time off work but I'll usually go out for the weekend or for longer if the run falls during the school holidays.
"It's not just about the run though, there's usually exhibitions the day before and you get a bit of time to take in the sights of each place."
But he's already feeling the strain from his first four runs this year.
"I know I can complete all 12, I just have to hope that I don't pick up any serious injuries along the way.
"I picked up a bit of a niggling tendon injury at the start of the year and its got worse with each marathon.
"Its meant I haven't been able to train that much between each run, but it's now a mission that I need to get through each one and complete the year, I can't let people down now.
"I'm not bothered about setting good times, I just want to get through them and say that I've done it.
"I'm always one for new challenges, and I felt that instead of doing a marathon run here and there for charity, I'd do one full year of runs to try and raise a lot of money for two chosen charities and complete my own personal challenge.
"I'm still confident I can do it if my body holds."
Dhaliwal trains at Greens Health and Fitness twice a week, and played hockey for Wakefield Hockey Club until commitments elsewhere forced him to quit in his early 20s.
Dhaliwal takes on the fifth leg of his impressive challenge when he travels to run the Edinburgh marathon on Sunday, May 25.
His chosen charities are Martin House Hospice, where he can be sponsored online at www.justgiving.com/12-12 and Children with Leukemia, where he can be sponsored at www.bmycharity.com/12in12.
