AN extra-time penalty by Mick Dyson sealed a thrilling victory for Ossett Trinity over Birstall Victoria in the Yorkshire League Division Two play-off final at Dewsbury Moor last Thursday.
It was always going to be a close game and in a very even contest each side scored two tries in the 80 minutes.
Dyson and the Vic's Matty Gowland each landed five goals from six attempts in normal time.
Gowland gave Victoria the lead with a penalty but a well-placed kick from Adi Moore was caught by Adam Smart to score in the corner, Dyson converted.
Gowland added two more goals to level matters but Dyson landed two to give Ossett a 12-8 half-time lead.
Early in the second half Alan Gorgan began a magnificent move for Ossett with a short kick and follow-up. He collected himself and passed inside to Dyson, who raced away for the try which he converted.
The Vic stormed back and soon after Adrian Lee crashed over for a try at the corner. Crucially Gowland's kick hit a post and came out.
The Vic levelled when Danny Kirk pounced on a short kick by Paul Frain and Gowland added the goal.
Both sides tried to snatch victory in the tense final minutes and the Vic's Carl Shuttleworth was unlucky to have a try disallowed.
Both teams missed penalty and drop-goal attempts and it remained 18-18.
Dyson landed his winner in fading light in extra-time as the teams battled away.
Man-of-the-match was Ossett's Gavin Westbury while Damian Platt and Moore also impressed.
Prop Danny Porter had another tremendous game for Birstall Victoria, well supported by Shuttleworth and Alan Holdsworth.
