Double delight as family celebrate cycling success
BATTYEFORD cyclist Jake Womersley won the British Schools Roller Cycling Under-12s Championships at Lichfield, setting new records for the 500 metres and 1000 metres in the process.
Jake, 12, who attends Mirfield Free Grammar School, has been cycling for around 18 months. He rides for the East Bradford Cycling Club and also attends coaching courses at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre, under the guidance of national elite champion Chris Young.
Last year, Jake won the National Grass Track Championships and he added the National Schools Roller Cycling title last weekend.
He was also due to take part in the National Cyclo Cross Championships but was ruled out due to a burst appendix.
Just three weeks after an operation, Jake was back in the saddle and finished second at the Yorkshire roller cycling championships.
Jake set a new age related National record time of 23.53 seconds at the 500m and broke the 100m record with a time of 50.25 seconds in the national championships at Lichfield.
Jake's 15-year-old sister, Rebecca Womersley, only took up cycling six weeks ago but the previous weekend was crowned Yorkshire Under-16s Schools Roller Cycling Championship after winning the event in Halifax.
She also finished first at the at the National Cyclo Cross Championships, beating the second placed girl by two minutes.
Rebecca's main interest is ballet but after seeing how much fun her brother was having, she decided to give cycling a go and obviously proved a natural.
