Another name can be added to the gallery of ‘Dewsbury Greats’, notable locals whose achievements are outstanding.
Dave Sykes (Wheely Dave), the paraplegic from Earlsheaton, has succeeded in his bid to be the first person to fly a microlight – virtually a flying motorbike – from York to Sydney, Australia.
The 11,600 nautical mile journey meant coping with hostile weather conditions, including scorching temperatures, sandstorms in Saudi Arabia, monsoons in Burma. Dave’s inspiration was Amy Johnson’s record flight 80 years ago. He also hopes to raise money for Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
Earlsheaton History Group members are keen to put on record their admiration for Dave, whose spirit of adventure and will to succeed against the odds are phenomenal. Residents of Earlsheaton can be justifiably proud – he is a local hero.
