Chris Caraher’s outstanding leadership and vision at Birkdale School has been rewarded by the pupils’ achievements. These achievements are despite the upheaval and uncertainty caused by Kirklees Council for the last four years.
The school was recognised recently as the most improved school in the Yorkshire region, and in the top 40 nationally.
Whilst I wish Westborough well for the future, I do believe that the success of Birkdale shows what a major mistake Kirklees has made. I always believed there was room for both schools in the area – two good schools serving a diverse community.
Despite the success of the school under Mrs Caraher’s leadership, Kirklees has not recognised in any way her service to the authority, which I find appalling.
I served the school as a governor for 13 years, eight as chairman of Governors and for seven of those I worked closely with Chris.
She was never less than professional and committed to the success of the school and for this I wholeheartedly thank her.
To her and everybody else involved over these last few years thank you and good luck.
