Stonehouse Manor care home in Moorlands Road is now home to Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy – two young pygmy goats, and they are already proving to be a big hit with the residents.
Studies have shown that so-called ‘animal assisted activities’ may be helpful for sufferers of dementia, and Susan Gooder, activities co-ordinator at the home, said that having the animals around was a real boost.
“The residents here love them, and the advantage of them being out in the yard is that they can see them from their windows.
“We couldn’t have brought the goats here without the help of the families of our residents.”
Employees from Wates Living Space donated many of the materials and the labour to help build the new sheds and a play area for the goats.
