British Transport Police said it was a civil matter and they would only take action if the travellers refused to move on after a court order was served.

A council spokeswoman said the council were aware of the travellers and would be taking legal action.

Senior station manager Steve Johnson said: “First TransPennine Express has deployed additional management and security staff and our managed areas are covered by state of the art CCTV.

“We will work with the council, British Transport Police and other local authorities to ensure that disruption in and around the station is kept to a minimum.”
