Around 20 Firefighters tackled a blaze at a shop in Mirfield town centre this afternoon (Saturday).

Fire crews from Mirfield, Dewsbury and Brighouse along with an aerial appliance from Huddersfield attended the Co-operative Food store on Huddersfield Road.

Firefighters said the fire started in a refrigeration compressor unit to the rear of the store late this morning and spread to the main building.

Matthew Goodall, watch commander at Dewsbury Fire Station, said: “The fire spread to the store room of the shop and the roof was also badly damaged.

“I would think the store is going to be closed for some time. There is going to be some fairly extensive repairs to the building and refrigeration unit before it can re-open.”

Investigations are still ongoing and no-one was hurt in the incident.
