A Dewsbury councillor has not ruled out the possibility of a community group taking over the running of Dewsbury’s Town Centre public toilets.

Councillor Paul Kane has suggested a community group in Dewsbury could take over the running of the public toilets in Longcauseway after the £1m cut to the street cleansing budget, which would close the toilets.

Coun Kane said: “The council is cutting about £22m of its services, so although it is a blow for the town centre, it is understandable that they would cut this.

“We will put it out at the next area committee planning meeting and ask any groups in the area if they would like to run it.

“The toilets were only refurbished a few years ago. We can only ask and see whether individual groups are interested in running them.”

This comes after this month’s news that Birstall’s loos would remain open after the Birstall Chamber of Trade agreed to sign a lease with the council until the end of this year to run the toilets.
