After a year of campaigning Batley Railway Station is going to get a fresh lick of paint.

Campaign group Friends of Batley Station (FOB) have organised a number of cleanups and worked with Northern Rail to make the station a more pleasant place from which to travel and now Northern Rail has agreed to repaint the building.

Coun Gwen Lowe (Lab, Batley West), who is a member of the group, said: “The station has been ignored for years and FOBS are delighted and very relieved that it is now being given much deserved TLC.

“FOBS were ever hopeful that it was going to happen but it was only confirmed last Friday that the work would commence on Monday and it’s not before time!”

FOBS have secured a number of improvements for the station including new roof panels and removal of weeds, as well routine cleanups.

They have recently looked at opening a shop and asked for volunteers who might have time to spare .

Coun Lowe said: “In 12 months we have achieved so much and I have to thank our members. I couldn’t have done it with it without their support and backing.”

Coun Lowe said she had also been in touch with Royal Mail about having the station’s postbox repainted.

The next annual FOBS meeting will be held will be held Thursday May 12, 6.30pm, at Batley Town Hall.

In December last year it was announced that transport firm Arriva would take over the Northern Rail company, which runs Batley’s station.
