REMEMBRANCE DAY: Kirklees pays its respects to honour the fallen

A number of services took place across Kirklees on Remembrance Sunday as tributes were paid to the fallen heroes.

In Dewsbury, Crow Nest Park fell silent as wreaths were laid at the war memorial.

Kirklees councillor Cathy Scott attended the service and read out prayers on behalf of the Catholic community.

“It was absolutely fantastic and was attended well by all across the community,” said councillor Scott.

“It was a phenomenal turnout and was so well-supported.

“The sea cadets were there, as were the army cadets and it was just a lovely occasion for something so important.”

Mirfield’s War Memorial in Ings Grove Park saw a huge turnout, with one of those in attendance the Mayor of Kirklees councillor Jim Dodds.

He said: “I was really impressed with how many people turned out.

“It looked as though there was around a thousand people and there was plenty of young children there.

“On the flipside, there was a veteran who was aged about 98 which was great to see.

“It’s really important people, both young and old, don’t forget the sacrifices that were made.”

Remembrance Sunday was especially poignant for councillor Dodds, who has produced a calendar which commemorates local soldiers who have lost their lives in recent conflicts, which he aims to sell in aid of the charity.

He said: “My charity this year is the Royal British Legion and having spent 35 years in the army, this is something close to my heart.

“We’ve had the full support of the families and also local businesses in Kirklees in producing and selling the calendars, and we’ve still got lots to sell.”

The calendars are on sale at £5 across Kirklees and all money goes toward the RBL’s Poppy Appeal.

Elsewhere, services also took place at Cleckheaton, where newly-elected Batley and Spen MP Tracy Brabin attended.

In Batley, a procession from Market Place made its way to the Batley War Memorial Gardens for a special service.

The War Memorial in Heckmondwike’s Green Park also staged a special Remembrance service and people in Spenborough paid their respects as they marched from the town hall to the Memorial Park to lay wreaths.
