A SAND and gravel quarry could be built in Thornhill Lees.
Ravensthorpe firm Newlay Concrete Limited is applying for planning permission to build a quarry on fields it is leasing off Forge Lane.
It hopes to spend eight years excavating 975,000 tonnes of sand and gravel, which firms in the area can use to make concrete.
Once the excavation is complete, Newlay will turn the land into two lakes – one as a nature conservation and one to be used for fishing.
The planning application for the quarry should be submitted in October, with a view to work starting on it between the end of next year and April 2013.
Once it is up and running, the quarry will be operational from 7am-6pm on weekdays and 7am-1pm on Saturdays.
