The devastating effects of alcohol are being made clear ina hard-hitting audio recording released by West Yorkshire Police.

Read by an actress, it provides a real life account of a drink-drive victim in West Yorkshire and forms part of the ongoing nationwide alcohol campaign In Focus.

Ch Insp Mark Bownass, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “This case study from a genuine drink-drive victim really highlights the impact of this offence.

“It can result in death and serious injury, often with long-lasting effects on health and wellbeing.

“The momentary decision to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol can not only ruin someone else’s life, but also your own.

“In the last year alone, there has been two fatal road traffic collisions in West Yorkshire where alcohol has been present.

“It really brings home the importance of making the right decisions and taking personal responsibility for your actions.

“We take proactive steps to apprehend those drivers intent on taking the risk. For instance, the force has made 2,360 arrests for driving over the prescribed limit in the twelve months up to August 2013.

“I hope the words of the victim in this audio recording resonate with people across the county and sink in.

“Anyone could fall victim to a drink-driver and by spreading the message, we can make a difference to people’s lives.

“Our advice is simple. If you are driving, do not drink. Get a taxi, plan a designated driver among friends or organise a family member to pick you up.

“Please also remember that alcohol can take time to work out of your system so please consider this if you’re considering driving the morning after.

“Making some easy decisions could potentially be the difference between life and death.”
