Gladys entertained members of the Cleckheaton Central Day Centre when she donned her Elizabeth II-themed costume during a party which took guests back to the 1920s.

Staff from Tesco in Batley gave the pensioners a helping hand by decorating the day centre in the colours of the Union flag and providing ingredients for the chef to cook a special lunch.

The group - many of whom were born in the same decade as the Queen - were transported back to the ‘roaring twenties’ for the day, and enjoyed a performance from the Heaton Avenue Primary School choir, fresh from their appearance in the Young Voices concert at Sheffield Arena.

Tesco also donated £350 to the day centre, and volunteers have used the funds to buy new wheelchairs to help local residents travel to and from the facility.

The supermarket’s community champion Meliane Cropper helped to organise the event, while Floristeria on Northgate provided flowers and From the Heart in Central Arcade donated helium balloons.

Anne Whitworth from the day centre said:

“Our regulars are great supporters of Her Majesty the Queen and all that she has achieved in her life, so it is great that Tesco helped us so much to put on such a celebration.”

“We’ve really enjoyed helping with the celebrations and I hope everyone had a great time. It is a huge achievement for the Queen to celebrate her 90th birthday and it’s been a pleasure celebrating this with the members of Cleckheaton Central Day Centre, many of whom have shared those 90 years.”
