Remembering Corporal Jake Hartley one year on

HERO: Corporal Jake Hartley

Today marks the first anniversary of the death of a Dewsbury solider who lost his life in Afghanistan.

Corporal Jake Hartley, 20, was one of six soldiers killed on March 6 last year when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device.

The former Earlsheaton Technology College pupil was highly regarded by his colleagues with Army bosses describing him as ‘one of the best.’

Hundreds of mourners packed into Christ Church in New Mill last May to pay their respects at his funeral.

Lasting tributes to Cpl Hartley have been made in Dewsbury since then.

A ward at the Priory Hospital in Earlsheaton was named after Cpl Hartley, following a suggestion by pupils at his old school.

And his name was one of 24 added to Crow Nest Park’s war memorial last year.

His family also received the Elizabeth Cross and Memorial Scroll – the medals give national recognition to families of those who have died on operations or as a result of terrorism.
