As temperatures plummeted across Kirklees, rough sleepers were reminded of the tough times ahead.

More than 50 people visited the Dewsbury Baptist Church and Holy Trinity Church in Batley Carr this week seeking help.

Volunteers provide a lifeline to destitute people, offering advice and companionship – as well as the only hot meal many might eat that week.

The project caters for the homeless and anyone who is on the poverty line.

Roger Coop, who lives on his own in Batley, said: “I get my flat pension but I struggle to cope.

“When the weather gets really bad it is important to have somewhere to turn.”

The project is funded by Kirklees Council and supported by donations.

Liz Exley, of CARE Dewsbury, said: “People have got addictions to alcohol and other substances. People will go without food to get their fix.We had a chap come in who was wearing a thin jacket and fortunately we were able to give him a padded coat.”
