A YOUNG swimmer has raised £2,500 for charity with a swim-a-thon.

Dylan Hughes, 14, organised the event as part of a six month scheme aiming to help and encourage children who face daily adversity to realise their full potential.

Called the AQA Unlocking Potential programme run by the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust, Dylan, who has cerebral palsy, was one of just 20 young people from across the UK to be selected.

As part of the programme he had to organise a community event, and Mirfield Free Grammar School pupil Dylan, from Liversedge, arranged the swim-a-thon at Spen Baths to highlight the lack of facilities for disabled swimmers in the area.

Dylan took lessons at Spen Baths, but they ended when the tutor left.

The event also helped Dylan raise money for the Hollybank Trust in Mirfield, which cares for severely disabled children and young people.

About 25 young swimmers took part including friends from Dylan’s school, Cleckheaton Rugby Club, and from swimming lessons.

His mum Claire said: “The swim-a-thon was fantastic. There was such a lovely atmosphere and everyone worked really hard. It was a huge success and we were all thrilled.

“Sponsorship is still increasing and we should achieve £2500 with the help of students at Mirfield Free Grammar, who have raised about £300.

“The school has been so supportive – the pupils have done a bring and buy sale to help raise money.”

Dylan is being mentored during the project by former England Rugby League player Paul Broadbent.

He said: “Dylan is an inspirational young man and it’s been a privilege to work with him on Unlocking Potential. Through his own efforts, he has really helped raise awareness for those with learning difficulties and has made a really positive impact in his community.”
