STAFF at Dewsbury train station have received awards for their commitment to customer service and running and environmentally-sound station.

And the station has been re-accredited under the secure stations scheme, having achieved the necessary national standards in passenger and staff security.

Staff attended the First TransPennine Express awards in Manchester to receive an environmental award – the station manages to recycle 90 per cent of all its waste.

Ilyas Hans, customer service assistant at the station, was awarded station colleague of the year after demonstrating his commitment to passenger safety .

In a recent incident a woman fell from a train onto the track. Ilyas leapt into action to co-ordinate a recovery, whilst ensuring the safety of the woman and passengers. Keeping a cool head, he evacuated the station and called the emergency services.

He said: “My role is to keep calm at all times and to think on the spot, taking control of any difficult situations. I’m very pleased to have been nominated and to have won station colleague of the year.”

Commenting on the station’s reaccreditation, Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Simon Reevell said: “It is reassuring for all those who rely on the rail network for their daily commute to know that the local station is prioritising and maintaining high standards for both its staff and passengers.”
