Mirfield’s monastery is applying for an alcohol licence ahead of the next stage of its refurbishment.

The Community of the
Resurrection wants to be
able to serve alcoholic drinks at its wedding functions and
receptions.

Its application to Kirklees Council comes as plans for £500,000 of improvements to the monastery’s amphitheatre are made.

Monastery manager Guy Laurie said: “We want to get it refurbished and get it up and running for local musical, theatrical and operatic groups to come in and perform.”

Part of the reason for applying for the alcohol licence is so that the monastery can serve alcohol at these events too.

If successful, the monastery in Stocks Bank Road will be able to serve alcohol from 1pm until 11pm and have live entertainment from noon until 11.30pm

A full appeal to help the monastery raise the £500,000 for the amphitheatre will be launched in April. It follows the monastery’s £2m capital appeal which paid for other refurbishments.
