Football Shorts - All the latest from Chelsea, Newcastle, Arsenal, Swansea, Barcelona, Leeds United, Bradford City, Huddersfield Town
This was a weekend of season-defining moments for West Yorkshire’s three league clubs. While Bradford City and Leeds United saw their slim playoff hopes dashed, Huddersfield Town, who came away from Elland Road with a shock-2-1 win over Leeds, took a massive step towards Championship safety.
But while Leeds manager Neil Warnock’s future still looks uncertain to say the least, Bradford City manager Phil Parkinson is expected to sign a new contract this week. Parky, who had been linked with a return to former club Reading, who are believed to have shortlisted Parkinson to replace Brian Macdermot. Although the Bantams were thumped 4-1 at Exeter over the weekend, the team has shown vast signs of improvement this season, and most fans would welcome an extended stay for Parkinson and his backroom staff.
Transfers: Michel Vorm, you know, the Dutch Keeper who turns out for Swansea every now and then, is linked with Arsenal, who haven’t had a decent stopper since Seamo (What’s that? Lehman? Really?). And if you believe everything you read, Tommy-V and P-Mertz are also on their way, to Barca (?!?) and Wolfsburg respectively as Arsenal are expected to make sweeping changed to their rearguard this summer. The BFG could be replaced by Ashley Williams who, when not kicking footballs into Dutch strikers’ heads, is providing a solid base for a top-half Premier League finish at the Liberty Stadium.
Qlimpique Newcastle are after yet another Frenchman. Alan Pardew is currently signing players like he’s playing Championship Manager, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks like he’ll be battling it out with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa for the crown at next year’s Newcastle’s Most Unusual Name competition. St Etienne, aside from giving us hits such has ‘You’re in a Bad Way’ and ‘Nothing Can Stop Us’, have brought Aubameyang to the world, who has scored 16 in 27 matches this season, which was enough to make Newcy chairman Mike Ashley fly out to see him play for the Saints last weekend.
Here’s something that caught my eye – Pavel Pograbnyak, who looks to be busy doing the square-root of sod-all for Reading this season, is on £65,000-a-week! Seriously! So it comes as absolutely no surprise to anyone that the chunky Russian has been linked with a return to former employers Zenit St Petersburg.
Chelsea are likely to be busy this summer, as they are after Beckham, Socrates, Diego and even Jesus! But Les Bleus aren’t having another summer of ageing playmaker-meltdown – rather the club have targeted Fiorentina’s Jackson Beckham Diego Socrates da Silva de Jesus (really!). Wowee.
Oh, and Barnsley are weighing up a move for former Bolton left-back Ricardo Gardner.
