A NEW name has been chosen for one of Dewsbury’s main shopping areas.

The Reporter can exclusively reveal that the Princess of Wales Precinct will be renamed Minstergate next year.

It follows a competition, backed by the paper, which gave schoolchildren the chance to be involved in a major rebranding of the plaza. Owners Ravenhill Estates hopes a fresh look will attract new investment in the centre, which was built in 1983.

Company accountant James Hulme said it was right to the next generation of shoppers involved.

“Hopefully if it’s a name they like and something they can relate to it will encourage them to shop in their town,” he said.

The winning name came from Jayden Barclay, 16, a pupil at Ravenshall School.

Mr Hulme said: “I think the main attraction was it really related to Dewsbury. When the judging panel came together it was important for us to think about the local area and it’s historical landmarks. Minstergate stood out for that reason.”

The next task for the panel – made up of representatives from Ravenhill, the Reporter, Kirklees Council, Longcauseway Church and Dewsbury Minster – was to choose a new logo for the centre.

After much debate, they chose two entries which will serve as inspiration for professional designers working on the project.

The entries came from St John Fisher Catholic High School pupil Lady Jesten Salta, 14, and Westborough High School pupil Zarah Karolia, 12.

The winners will each get a certificate and prize during tomorrow’s Christmas lights switch on celebrations.

Town centre manager Andrew Sloman said: “The young people of Dewsbury really did us proud in their creativity.

“I’m delighted with the panel’s choices. The Minster came through in several designs, but it was Jayden that can up with a name which really hit a note.”

The rebranding of the centre is expected to take place in the spring or summer next year.
