Health roadshow visits to teach shoppers the signs of cancer

A health roadshow is visiting the White Rose Centre to teach shoppers about the signs of cancer.

The Be Clear on Cancer information stand will focus on lung cancer as well as two other serious conditions - lung and heart disease.

The show will be at the shopping centre on August 24 and 25 as part of a Public Health England campaign, and will be highlighting symptoms such as a persistent cough and shortness of breath, which can indicate all three illnesses. A nurse will be on hand to answer questions and information leaflets will be available.

The roadshow has also teamed up with White Rose to display promotional messages in the centre which encourage people to visit their GP if they find themselves becoming breathless in everyday situations.

Around 136 people in Kirklees are diagnosed with lung cancer each year, while 4,116 are living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which includes emphysema and bronchitis. Early diagnosis is crucial to improving patients’survival chances and their quality of life.

The campaign is being supported by former Heartbeat actress Tricia Penrose..

“My mum was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2010, thankfully she is still here today. I’ll never forget the day she received her diagnosis, the whole family was in complete shock.

“Mum had been a smoker and both of her parents smoked, but she quit years before her diagnosis. We stayed positive throughout her treatment and were determined she was going to beat it.

“My family didn’t know the signs of lung cancer, but now we do and we all want to do encourage others to be aware of the symptoms. A persistent cough or inappropriate breathlessness, are signs that something is wrong.

“Please don’t ignore them - you can survive lung cancer if you are diagnosed early. My mum is living proof of that.”
