GCSE RESULTS

Mirfield Free Grammar THE Mirfield Free Grammar is celebrating another successful year. The school has seen substantial year on year improvement in GCSE results over the past four years.

78 per cent of Year 11 students achieved five or more A* to C passes at GCSE with 51 per cent attaining English and Maths as part of their total, and the top performing student gaining 11 A*s.

The school is also celebrating the opening of a new 1.9 million Sixth Form Centre and an 'outstanding' judgement from Ofsted in February 2008.

Headteacher Lorraine Barker said: "I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to all of our students and staff on these outstanding results and another superb year for The MFG. Very well done!"

Birkdale High School

BIRKDALE High School headteacher Chris Caraher congratulated pupils and staff on some of the school's best ever results.

She said: "A very successful year for the school has been rounded off with excellent examination results. The number of students achieving more than five grade A* to C has almost doubled at 38 per cent this year. Similarly 98 per cent of our Year 11 students left us achieving exam success. These results further underscore the progress the school continues to make.

"Our Key Stage 3 results are equally encouraging – especially for those pupils achieving Level 6 and above. All three subjects exceeded targets set for the number of pupils achieving level 6 and above and we were on target for level 5.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents for their continued support together with thanks to all the teachers whose efforts and dedication have brought about such good results."

Earlsheaton Technology College

PUPILS and staff were celebrating their best ever GCSE results at Earlsheaton Technology College yesterday.

The school beat targets for pupils getting five or more A-C grades and made it into the top 25 per cent of schools in the country for improving pupil performance.

Associate headteacher David Archer said: "We're delighted with the results. We've exceeded our targets and for the first time ever over 50 per cent of our pupils got five A-Cs or more. The important measure is five A-C including English and maths and we've exceeded our target by three per cent. These results reflect the hard work of the pupils and the staff and the support that parents have given to their children."

Among those scoring top grades was Emily Cocker, 16, from Hanging Heaton, who was thrilled with her eight As, three Bs and a C.

She said: "I can't believe it. I was expecting straight Cs and had two As as a target so I'm absolutely ecstatic. I'm off to do my A Levels at Park Lane College in Leeds next year."

Classmate Luke Gibbons, 16, from Hanging Heaton, is set to study for his A Levels at Huddersfield New College after getting four A*, four As, three Bs and one C.

He said: "I didn't think I'd do as well as I did so I'm definitely pleased. I'm really pleased to have done so well in science and English. I'll be celebrating tonight!"

Meanwhile, Natalie Nelmes, from Earlsheaton, was set for a double celebration with her exam results yesterday and her 16th birthday today.

She said: "I was terrified this morning but I'm feeling really, really good now. I'm really pleased with my grades – they've come as a really big surprise. I got four A*, three As, four Bs and a C."

Westborough High School

STUDENTS at Westborough High School have once again achieved excellent GCSE results. 51 per cent of students have achieved five A* to C grades which is four per cent higher than 2007.

Headteacher Janet Pruchniewicz said: "We are once again very proud of our students and their achievements. We have broken our own record again. Our students, supported by outstanding teachers and very supportive parents have shown just how capable they are. We have some very pleased students and some very proud parents.

"Most of our students are going to college or sixth form centres and we wish them all the best in their future careers."

Thornhill Community Science College

THORNHILL Community Science College has achieved its best ever GCSE results.

Yesterday's results mean it is one of the top 25 per cent for improving pupils' results in the country.

The percentage of pupils achieving five grade Cs or above was 51 per cent, a massive improvement on last year's figure of 34 per cent.

In June, the school was named as one of three in Dewsbury facing closure if it did not bring the number of pupils achieving five grade Cs or above, including maths and English, above 30 per cent.

But this year the proportion of pupils achieving this jumped from 23 per cent to 34 per cent.

Headteacher David Powell said: "We are all delighted by the GCSE results. They're the best the college has ever achieved, by miles.

"It's a just reward for the tremendous efforts made by Year 11 students and their staff and the superb encouragement and support made by parents."

St John Fisher Catholic High School

ST JOHN Fisher Catholic High School headteacher Kevin Higgins said: "We are really pleased and there are some really happy young people - there have been some fantastic results. Sixty-eight percent of our kids have got five or more higher grades and these are the best results we have ever had in terms of that.

"Ninety-nine percent of our pupils received some qualification and for a comprehensive school we are very pleased.
