A FORMER Dewsbury teacher is at the centre of a row over a high-profile education job.
Maggie Atkinson – who was head of English at Birkdale High in the 1980s – has been appointed Children's Commissioner for England.
However, Education Secretary Ed Balls who placed her in the post has come under fire from MPs over his choice.
Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman, who is also chairman of the Commons select committee on children, schools and families, says Mrs Atkinson is not right for the job. And he accused Mr Balls of 'bullying' by snubbing MPs' attempts to veto his choice of candidate.
After his committee interviewed her earlier this month, Mr Sheerman argued that she is not tough enough to stand up to Mr Balls.
Mrs Atkinson was picked from 40 candidates for the 138,000 job as children's commissioner.
