Engineers of the future face off

Children from Heaton Avenue Primary in Cleckheaton, St Mary’s Catholic Primary in Batley, John Curwen Co-operative Primary in Heckmondwike, Whitechapel C of E Primary in Cleckheaton and Gomersal Primary have all been involved in Kirklees Council’s Primary Engineer project since January.

The schools have been linked with engineers from local businesses who have visited classrooms to promote engineering skills and lead activities.

Over 20 schools gathered at Deighton Sports Arena to enable youngsters to race cars they had designed themselves, before pitching their products to engineers and explaining how they had built the vehicles.

All the children were presented with certificates, while the winners and the runners-up in each category were invited to the Northern Region Primary Engineer celebration event in Burnley, Lancashire.

Coun Masood Ahmed, Cabinet member for schools, said:

“Kirklees is well known as a place of innovation and excellence in engineering. This scheme is not only delivering the national curriculum, it also brings schools and businesses closer together and equips more of our young people with important skills for the future.”

Secondary schools will be encouraged to take part in future engineering schemes and events.
